At its heart lies a captivating legend—a story that has stood the test of time and continues to embody the spirit of this vibrant festival. The story of King Mahabali, a mythical figure revered in Kerala, is an enchanting tale that intertwines myth, morality, and the essence of Kerala's identity.

Happy Onam

The Tale of King Mahabali

As the legend goes, King Mahabali was a valiant and benevolent ruler who presided over the land of Kerala. He belonged to the Asura (demon) lineage but was revered for his righteousness, compassion, and selflessness. Mahabali's reign was marked by prosperity and well-being; his kingdom flourished with wealth and happiness, and his subjects adored him. Under his rule, there was no poverty, hunger, or injustice. The people lived harmoniously, sharing what they had with one another, and the atmosphere resonated with kindness and generosity.

However, Mahabali's incredible reign upset the balance of power in the cosmos. Indra, the king of the gods, grew envious of Mahabali’s popularity and the flourishing kingdom he had built. Fearing that Mahabali would become more powerful than the gods, Indra plotted to diminish his influence. To counter Mahabali's growing power, the gods approached Lord Vishnu for assistance. Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, took on the form of Vamana, a Brahmin boy, to address the situation.

The Vamana Avatar

Disguised as a humble Brahmin, Vamana approached the grand court of Mahabali during one of the king's lavish yajnas (ritual sacrifices). Impressed by the spectacle of the ceremony, Vamana asked Mahabali for a modest gift—a mere three paces of land, measured by his own feet. The wise king, recognizing the depths of Vamana’s humility and intentions, chuckled at the request, thinking it trivial and insignificant. He agreed, confident in his ability to fulfill the demand without harming his kingdom’s wealth.

However, the cunning of Vamana was soon revealed. With each step Vamana took, he grew exponentially in size. In just two strides, he covered the expanse of the entire Earth and the skies. With his third step, he placed his foot upon Mahabali's head, sending him to the netherworld. This act was not an act of vengeance but rather a reminder to Mahabali of humility and the transient nature of power.

Mahabali’s Return

Before his banishment, Mahabali was granted a boon—a promise from Lord Vishnu that he could return to his beloved kingdom once a year. Overjoyed, Mahabali agreed, and thus, every year during the festival of Onam, he is believed to return to visit his subjects. It is this return of Mahabali that is celebrated during Onam, as people prepare to welcome their king with joy, flowers, and feasts.

The celebration of Onam is deeply rooted in this tale, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The festival serves as a reminder to participants of the virtues of gratitude, unity, and compassion that Mahabali stood for. It reflects the community spirit where people from varied backgrounds come together, transcending societal divisions to honor their beloved king.
